bra shopping after breast augmentationShopping for new clothes that compliment your new curves is one of the most exciting things to do following breast augmentation. Not only do you get to see what your enhanced breasts will look like in your favorite styles, but you can experiment with new looks that accentuate your best assets. But before you embark on a shopping spree for new tops and dresses, you’ll have to update your bra collection first.

You’ll definitely need a larger cup size, as well as comfortable bras that adequately support the extra breast weight. You’ll also have to decide whether you want push-up bras, or bras that play down your new breast size.

Here are six tips that will help you find the best bras following breast augmentation.

1. Determine the right band size

In most cases, your band size will stay the same, since your underbust measurement normally isn’t affected by breast augmentation. But in your mission to find the perfect bra, it doesn’t hurt to measure your underbust just to be on the safe side.

Exhale fully, then use a tape measure to measure your torso right under your breasts where your bra band normally sits. Round your measurement to the nearest whole number, then add four or five inches to find your band size. For example, if your underbust measures at 29 or 30 inches, you’d wear a band size of 34.

2. Find the right cup size

Use the tape measure to measure around the fullest part of your breasts, which for most women, is over the nipples. Then, subtract your underbust measurement from the breast measurement. The difference in inches will give you the most accurate cup size. For example, a 1-inch difference is an A cup, a 2-inch difference is a B cup, a 3-inch difference is a C cup, and so on.

3. Try different bras from your favorite brand

If you find a certain brand that offers the best fit and feels most comfortable, consider trying different styles from the same brand. In most cases, your breasts will feel comfortable and great in nearly every style from that particular brand. For instance, look for strapless bras, bras that lack underwire, push-up bras, etc.

4. Be adventurous

Breast augmentation surgery not only enhances your curves and breast size, but your self-esteem and confidence, too! Don’t hesitate to try new styles and colors you’ve never worn before. Experiment with black, bold colors, lace, thick straps, and other looks you might not have been drawn to before your procedure. Changing your style can make your new breasts seem even more exciting.

5. Get help from a pro

If you’re still having problems finding a bra that fits comfortably and offers the best support, consider shopping at a department store or specialty bra shop staffed with individuals trained to help you find the perfect bra. These women can help measure your bust and recommend bras that work best for you based on your body type, and on the size and shape of your breasts.

6. Buy multiple bras at once

When you find a style and brand you like, consider buying multiple bras at once so they last longer, and so you’re not doing as much laundry. Washing bras repeatedly can cause them to wear out faster. Also, wash your bras in cold water or by hand per the manufacturer’s laundering directions, and hang them to air dry. This helps maintain the quality, shape, and functionality of your bras.
