Two of the most common types of fillers are Juvéderm® XC and Juvéderm Voluma® XC (Restylane versus Restylane Silk) but what’s the difference? Many skincare experts offer treatments using one or the other and — if you don’t know what makes each unique — it can be difficult to choose which is right for you.
First, think of your face in 3-D with multiple layers. Your cheekbones give you structural support, while the muscle layer, soft tissue layer, and skin give you the animation, volume, and coloring that makes you unique. Each injectable works to achieve specific goals with different physiochemical properties, giving you a boost in certain areas of your face.
Each filler is subdivided into categories of their makeup: hyaluronic acid (Belotero®, Juvéderm, Voluma, Restylane), calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse®), and poly L-lactic acid (Sculptra). Furthermore, the concentration of product and use of anesthetic breaks each category down into subcategories. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Juvéderm XC and Juvéderm Voluma XC, can be injected almost anywhere you want to add volume or shape and are ideal for first-time patients. Made with a molecule naturally found in your skin, HA fillers have a high compatibility with little to no reaction and can be injected in:
- Nasolabial lines
- Forehead lines
You can also differentiate the two fillers by looking at how much volume they provide and their heaviness. Juvéderm XC is a lighter, more superficial filler recommended for injections into the lips, lip lines, and nasolabial folds, while Juvéderm Voluma XC is a heavier HA filler for longevity of volume added to the cheek bones, mid-face, and temporal hollow.
According to the Allergan Medical, Juvéderm’s manufacturer, here are the following definitions for the two injectables:
A non-surgical filler your doctor uses to instantly smooth out moderate to severe lines along the sides of your nose and mouth. Natural-looking results may last up to one year with optimal treatment.
Juvéderm Voluma XC
The first injectable gel that is FDA-approved to instantly correct age-related volume loss in the cheek area for people over 21. It adds volume, creating contour and lift for up to two years with optimal treatment.
The best way to learn if Juvéderm XC or Juvéderm Voluma XC is right for you is talking with an experienced nurse injector. Our two nurse injectors, Mary Bokath, RN, BSN, CPSN, and Kristen Kneidel RN, BSN, are happy to meet with any patient to see what filler is right for you.
