In a society obsessed with youth, the popularity of eyelid surgery continues to surge. It has doubled among people 65 and older in the past two decades. Cultural changes such as longer life expectancy and people remaining in the workforce longer have caused many to combat signs of aging and look the way they feel. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, was the fourth most popular cosmetic surgery in 2016, according to the 2017 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report. The procedure received a 94 percent “Worth It” rating on Realself, with many celebrating more youthful, bright eyes.

Popularity

Eyelid surgery tightens and removes excess sagging skin around the eye. The procedure rids of crepey eye skin, puffy bags, dark circles and drooping eyelids. It can also create a crease where one is missing, such as with Asian eyelid surgery. It is popular among both men and women, especially in the over 40 age group. In fact, it is the most popular procedure in those 55 years and over, and the second most popular among those age 40-54. Even though women make up 85 percent of all eyelid surgeries, in 2016, it ranked second most popular surgery for men.

The Procedure

The procedure usually takes two hours or less, and is tailored to the individual’s needs with some opting for top lids only, other just the bottom and some requiring both. Incisions are made in the upper and/or lower eyelids to remove excess skin and fatty tissue. The recovery process is not extensive, but it will require taking a few days off work. Some swelling and bruising may be common, but there is not much pain reported by patients.

Results

Eyelid surgery can give you a younger, brighter appearance. It can also improve vision in cases where excessive skin weighed down on the eyelid and hindered vision.

According to Monarch Plastic Surgery Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Keith Hodge, “ Our goal is to deliver an eyelid rejuvenation procedure that looks both youthful and very natural. We tailor the procedure based on how the patient is aging and their desired outcome.”
