tummy-tuck-faqs.jpgDo you cover up a loose or paunchy belly with baggy shirts and shaping garments? Do you dislike what time, genetics, or pregnancy have done to your tummy? A tummy tuck may be a great solution.

Check out the most common questions about this highly successful and popular procedure.

Question #1: Am I a candidate for a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck patients are generally in good health, and may have stretched out or excess skin and muscle from pregnancy, genetics, or weight changes. You don’t have to be at your perfect weight to benefit, but you should be within about 20 percent of your ideal body weight. This often yields the best results.

Question #2: Can men get tummy tucks?

Yes. Many men who have lost weight find that their abdomen has excess skin and a paunchy appearance. This can be greatly improved with a tummy tuck.

Question #3: Is a tummy tuck a weight loss procedure?

No. A tummy tuck will tighten and sculpt your abdomen by removing excess skin and tightening muscles. Liposuction may also be used if excess fat needs to be removed. But the procedure alone is not designed to help you lose weight.

Question #4: Is a tummy tuck permanent?

It is designed to give you permanent improvement of your abdominal area. But, if you get pregnant or experience significant weight gain after your surgery, some of your results may be diminished.

Question #5: Can a tummy tuck get rid of stretch marks?

A tummy tuck is not designed to eliminate stretch marks, but many patients do notice a reduction in stretch marks after the procedure. If the stretch marks sit lower on the abdomen, some of them may be removed with the excess skin during the surgery.

Question #6: How soon after pregnancy can I get a tummy tuck?

There’s no specific time period that you have to wait. But, you should be healed from your delivery and be well enough to recover from surgery. If you’re still breastfeeding, this should be discussed with your surgeon.

Question #7: Can I just get liposuction instead of a tummy tuck?

It depends on your needs. Loose or excess skin cannot be corrected with liposuction alone. Stretched out muscles will not be tightened with liposuction. But if your skin is elastic and firm and you only have some excess fat, Smartlipo™ may benefit you. This is a less invasive procedure that uses the power of a laser to enhance skin tightening with smaller incisions and less downtime.
