How-Does-a-Brow-Lift-Work.jpgYou may not realize it, but the eyes—as well as the forehead—actually play a critical role in communicating how we feel. Of course, you want your face to give off the right impression about your emotions. Unfortunately, a heavy, furrowed brow with excess sagging skin can give off the wrong impression. It can make you look unhappy, worried, angry, or tired when you’re in fact happy and full of life.

If you don’t think your eyes accurately display how you feel, a brow lift might provide a solution.

What is a brow lift?

A brow lift is a surgical procedure that can rejuvenate the upper third of the face to create a refreshed appearance that better reflects your vibrancy and alertness. This procedure can reduce deep furrows and horizontal lines, correct sagging, heavy eyebrows, and restore a smooth, youthful contour to the area.

Patients with genetically thicker and heavier brows, and those with inherited furrowed lines above the nose often have brow lifts to eliminate the mistaken belief that they’re always angry or tired. They undergo the procedure to bring out the alertness and brightness in their eyes that was previously hidden under a sagging brow. In addition, brow lifts are often performed to reduce the effects of the aging process on the eyes and forehead by improving the appearance of frown lines and furrows due to repetitive muscle activity or stress.

How does it work?

This cosmetic surgery is an outpatient procedure. It is either performed with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia with local anesthesia. The time it takes to complete the procedure varies, particularly if you are undergoing multiple procedures at once.

During the procedure, your cosmetic surgeon will begin by creating an incision hidden under the hairline. Then, both the tissues and the muscles that cause the drooping, furrowing appearance of the brow will be removed or altered. This results in raised eyebrows, the minimizing of frown lines, and the smoothing out of the brow.

The incision will then be closed, either with staples or sutures, which will be removed approximately one week later.

In conjunction with a facelift or eyelid surgery

If you have severe overhanging skin on the upper eyelid area, your cosmetic surgeon may suggest that you undergo eyelid surgery at the same time as your brow lift to improve results.

In addition, brow lifts are also commonly performed in conjunction with a facelift in order to create a uniformly smooth appearance to the face.

What to expect after surgery

This procedure is associated with very little pain after the surgery. Patients often feel a tightening sensation in the forehead along with slight discomfort in the area. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medication for this discomfort. There will be bruising and swelling in the area, which should start to disappear in about a week. You may also notice some temporary itching, numbness, and tingling as well.

Longevity of results

You can expect the results from your brow lift surgery to last for several years. However, time marches on, and eventually the aging process will catch up. After many years, the tissue in the forehead may begin to settle with gravity. Living a healthy lifestyle, avoiding smoking, and wearing sunscreen can help improve the longevity of your results.

If you look in the mirror and don’t think that your eyes match your emotions, if the aging process is taking its toll on the upper area of your face, or if people often misread how you’re feeling, brow lift surgery may be able to help.
