Although some women elect to have a tummy tuck to rejuvenate their abdomen after having children, others choose the procedure after experiencing a significant amount of weight loss. Many people find that they are left with loose, sagging skin around the abdomen and waist. For some, this excess skin may simply be annoying, while for others it may feel uncomfortable or embarrassing. It may even derail some people from continuing to pursue healthy habits. They may think, “Why try to improve my health and my figure if I’m going to be stuck with this excess skin and tissue around my belly?” While this may seem depressing, a recent study performed by the University of Maryland School of Medicine has shown that there are several benefits to undergoing a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty.
Improved, stable weight
The University of Maryland School of Medicine study determined that patients who underwent a tummy tuck after losing a significant amount of weight were much more motivated to maintain a healthy weight. These patients were also far less likely to return to their prior, heavier weights, and thus had long-term emotional and physical benefits after tummy tuck surgery. Even if patients regained weight after their tummy tuck, they tended to gain only one-fourth as much as those who experienced similar weight loss without abdominoplasty.
Improvements to everyday life
In addition to maintaining a healthier weight after a tummy tuck, most patients were also found to have much more satisfaction in their ability to perform everyday tasks after surgery. Tasks that were difficult when overweight may have been somewhat easier after weight loss, but the skirt of remaining skin and tissue still led to discomfort when performing chores, exercising, working, and interacting with friends and family.
Healthier skin and improved healing
Finally, the study found that the majority of patients who undergo abdominoplasty also benefit by having fewer skin infections and improved healing after surgery when compared to other surgical procedures on patients who have not had tummy tucks. By removing excess skin that hangs over the abdomen, there are fewer nooks and crannies for an infection to take hold, and the patient benefits by not having to spend excess time trying to clean around, under, or between folds of skin. By removing this extra tissue, the new flatter abdomen is easier to care for and signs of any skin infection or abnormality are readily visible and can be treated right away.
A tummy tuck helps many patients simply feel more comfortable in their own skin, allowing them to enjoy life, and improving their overall skin health.
