Ever wonder if you’re putting your skincare products on in the right order? Is it tone before cleanse or cleanse before tone? A simple rule of thumb is to go from thin to thick. Apply your heaviest products last and think of it as a layering process. The answer to our prayers, Monarch Aesthetician Erika Wetherill clears it all up this week with a step-by-step order of products for an advanced anti-aging skincare regimen! For a basic skincare regimen to get you started, just skip the steps marked optional.

When You Wake Up

  1. Cleanse

Start your morning off right with a refreshing cleanser! Remove all the impurities and oils and give your skin a fresh start. We recommend the Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser.

  1. Tone (Optional)

Toners are a great addition to your cleanser if you have oily or acne-prone skin or clogged pores. They remove any extra dirt that your cleanser missed, while balancing the skin’s pH level, which translates into a glow! Our must-have toner? The Obagi Nu-Derm Toner does just the trick.

  1. Vitamin C (Optional)

Next step? Vitamin C, and we’re talking more than OJ. A vitamin C serum will counteract the harmful effects of sun and thicken the dermis layer. Vivier C E Peptides will bring your damaged skin back into balance.

  1. Eye Cream

Eye cream is an often forgotten, but crucial step, especially as we age. The skin around the eye is completely different from the rest of your skin, and it requires its own cream to match. We’re in awe over the Neocutis Micro Eyes Riche Rejuvenating Balm. This balm lends a hand to our crow’s feet, crepiness, under-eye puffiness and hollowness.

  1. Exfoliate (Optional)

For an extra boost, try an exfoliating lotion to encourage the formation of new cells. Perfect for an anti-aging beauty routine, the Obagi Exfoderm Forte creates a clear and more even tone and texture. It improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots.

  1. Moisturize

A moisturizer is a must-have for well-kept skin. Try the Obagi Hydrate Facial Moisturizer to keep your skin soft and supple.

  1. Sunscreen

Finally, end your routine with some sunscreen. Sunscreen should be applied no matter the season, as the sun has a sneaky way of catching up to your skin, even on cloudy days. Our current fave is the EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. According to Wetherill, “Sunscreen stops working in less than three hours, so reapplication is important. For on the go touch ups, Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Sunscreen Brush is a great option for quick application.”

Before You Go to Bed

  1. Cleanse

Once again, start your routine off with a cleanser. A more powerful cleanser is recommended to clear away all the makeup and oils of the day. The Obagi Nu-Derm Foaming Gel leaves the skin feeling clean and fresh, and is our recommendation for a night time cleanser.

  1. Tone (Optional)

Break out the Obagi Nu-Derm Toner once again for a balanced, clean face.

  1. Eye Cream

Let an eye cream work on your face while you sleep, so you look refreshed when you wake up! The Skinbetter Smoothing Daily Treatment Cream EYE is our pick. This magic-in-a-jar eye cream diminishes the appearance of crow’s feet, under-eye circle, puffiness and bags.

  1. Retinoid (Optional)

Supercharge your skin overnight and make massive anti-aging changes with a retinoid. The Skinbetter Regenerating AlphaRet® Overnight Cream FACE is perfect for boosting collagen production, moisturizing and evening the skin tone.

  1. Moisturize

Finish off the day with ample hydration. As your face creams sinks into your skin overnight, it is important to make sure you have a great product. The Skinceuticals A.G.E. Interrupter is an amazing cream to improve the creping and thinning of mature skin. It helps to reverse the erosion of elasticity and firmness, all while you sleep!
