spider veins causes and treatmentWith winter upon us, most people are covering their legs with long pants, boots, and tights. And if you’ve struggled with unsightly spider veins, you may be relieved to have the opportunity to cover your legs for a few months.

Why not make the most of the winter months by getting those leg veins treated? When summer arrives, your veins could be gone and you’ll be ready to wear shorts or skirts. Imagine being able to go to the beach with vein-free, great-looking legs.

Why do I have spider veins?

When your heart pumps blood throughout your body, the blood in your legs needs to pump upward against gravity. In order to do this, each vein has a one-way flap that keeps the blood moving toward the heart. But if this flap becomes weakened or damaged, a small amount of blood can pool in the vein, unable to move back up. This causes the appearance of spider veins.

Spider veins look like tiny branches or “spider webs” that appear just under the surface of the skin. They are difficult to cover and conceal, as they tend to be bright blue or red in color and can spread to large areas. They typically pose no health issues, but their cosmetic appearance can be distressing to many people.

Although they’re assumed to be a women’s problem, spider vein issues can be a nuisance for men and women. Some of the causes include:

  • Heredity (if spider veins run in your family, you have a higher chance of getting them)
  • Aging (the risk goes up as you get older)
  • Sun damage
  • For women — pregnancy and hormonal changes

Fortunately, there are safe, non-invasive ways to eliminate the appearance of these veins. Using a special laser and Intense Pulse Light (IPL), the veins are gently heated, which causes them to shrink and eventually dissolve. This state-of-the-art treatment offers virtually no downtime and side effects are minimal, typically including minor swelling and/or discomfort for a few hours after the procedure.

Depending on your individual needs, you may need to schedule more than one treatment for full results. It’s another reason why treating veins in the winter is convenient. You could have all your appointments done and be on your way to more gorgeous legs before the warm weather returns.

Talk with a licensed aesthetician who is skilled in treating spider veins on the legs to inquire about your treatment options. Now is the time to get the great-looking legs you’ve always wanted before shorts season arrives.
