skin care new years resolutionsWhile you may strive to look your best all year long, it’s hard to be perfect and diligent 100 percent of the time with your beauty and skin care routine. Even models and celebrities occasionally forget to apply sunscreen, fall asleep wearing makeup, or forget to the take time to make appointments with their plastic surgeons or aestheticians. As you continue to age, it’s important that you stay on top of your skin care routine so you can maintain a youthful-looking appearance.

Want to improve the appearance of your skin this year? Check out these 10 skin care resolutions for the New Year.

1. Apply sunscreen every day

Most people associate sunscreen use with the hot summer months, but even spending time outdoors during the winter exposes your skin to UV rays. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, and look for sheer or non-greasy brands that will complement your current makeup and skin care routine. Check out Nu-Derm Sun Shield Matte Broad Spectrum by Obagi, which has an SPF of 50 and is sheer, PABA-free, and fragrance-free for all skin types.

2. Moisturize your skin after bathing

Taking a warm or hot shower may feel great at the end of a long day, but warm temperatures will strip your skin of its essential oils. Apply a moisturizer to your skin immediately after bathing to help retain moisture and prevent wrinkling. Waiting too long after you shower to apply moisturizer will result in dry skin. Try using iS Clinical Moisturizing Complex, which hydrates and shields your skin from environmental damage and leaves you with a soft, supple complexion.

3. Shower after hitting the gym

Failing to shower after working out will increase your chances of developing acne, especially on your back. Invest in moisture-wicking exercise clothing to help your body stay more dry throughout your exercise routine, and shower as soon as possible to rinse and cleanse your skin of sweat and bacteria.

4. Remove your makeup every night

Makeup will often mix with your skin’s oil throughout the course of the day, and even has the ability to trap free radicals that float around in the air, such as automobile exhaust. Remove your makeup at the end of the day as soon as you get home or before you go to bed to keep your skin clean and to wash away any skin-damaging free radicals. Try using iS Clinical Cleansing Complex to maintain your skin’s essential natural oils, or try Monarch’s Hydroxy Cleanse, which is ideal for those who are prone to acne.

5. Drink more water

Our bodies are comprised of between 60 and 70 percent water, which is essential to helping flush toxins and gives your skin a radiant, young look. Failure to keep your skin hydrated can result in dry, tight, and flaky skin that becomes more prone to wrinkling. Make the effort to drink more water this year to keep your skin looking smooth and vibrant.

6. Clean all makeup brushes

Some women go months, and even years without cleaning their makeup brushes, which can increase the risk for skin irritation due to makeup and skin oil buildup on the brushes. Rinse and wash all your makeup brushes once per month using mild soap and warm water. Avoid cleaning your brushes in hot water, since hot temperatures can cause bristles to fall out. Then, reshape your brushes and allow them to dry thoroughly overnight before using.

7. Exfoliate on a regular basis

After the age of 30, your skin will usually take about 28 days to replenish and revitalize on its own, but in the process, your skin cells can end up drying out. Add exfoliation to your skin care routine, and exfoliate your skin one or two times per week. Try using Obagi Exfoderm Forte, which helps improve the look of fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots while softening a rough texture.

8. Stop touching your face

Touching your face with your hands periodically throughout the day will transfer oil, dirt, and other bacteria to your face that could clog pores and trigger pimples and acne. Avoid rubbing or touching your face if at all possible throughout the day, and find other things to do with your hands if you find that touching your face is a habit you often do out of nervousness or boredom.

9. Take better care of your hands

Keep your hands moisturized throughout the day, and stop using your nails as tools when opening boxes and other packaging. Your hands will often give away your true age, since they’re one of the most neglected body parts when it comes to your daily moisturizing routine. Stop using harsh, antibacterial soaps, and apply sunscreen to the backs of your hands. At night, treat your hands with lotion that contains alpha-hydroxy acid to keep your hands looking smooth and youthful.

10. Stick with your new routine

Make this year your best year for beauty yet by sticking to your skin care routine! In most cases, you may not see positive skin care results for several weeks after starting treatment, especially if you’re using anti-aging products. Just stick with your routine, and make regular appointments with a licensed aesthetician who can help you stay on track with maintaining your skin and appearance.
