It happens to the best of us—in fact, it happens to all of us: wrinkles. Over time, marionette lines, crow’s feet, and other lines will eventually engrave your once wrinkle-free face. And with those wrinkles come an aged appearance that most of us want to prevent for as long as possible.
Of course, you don’t want to stop enjoying life and avoid smiling in order to prevent wrinkles from etching themselves deeper and deeper onto your face. And you don’t have to. Keep smiling, because here are seven easy and effective ways to prevent wrinkles.
1. Avoid direct sun exposure
One of the absolutely easiest ways to prevent wrinkles is to avoid direct sun exposure. The sun is the top cause of wrinkles—even above genetics. After a long, hot summer, you might find yourself with new fine lines and wrinkles that weren’t there before. Stay indoors at peak hours and cover up as much as you can to avoid exposure.
2. Quit smoking
Quitting smoking isn’t only great for your health, it’s also good for your skin. Smoking is undoubtedly linked to premature wrinkles. Smoking breaks down the skin’s elastic and collagen, leaving you with winkles and looser, sagging-prone skin. The more you smoke—and the longer you’ve smoked—the more skin damage and wrinkling you’re bound to have. If you’ve needed extra motivation to quit smoking, this is it.
3. Sleep on your back
Good news: you can prevent wrinkles while you sleep! Sleeping on your back is a great way to prevent the development of fine lines. Those pesky sleep lines that etch your face after a long night when you’re on your stomach or side can turn into wrinkles over time. However, we know how difficult it can be to change up your sleeping position—it might be impossible. The next best thing is to use satin pillow cases instead of cotton and switch up your regular pillow for a beauty sleep pillow that is made with a unique shape and special foam to alleviate pressure on the face.
4. Get a facial massage
Do it yourself or have a massage therapist give you a facial massage. This ancient Japanese practice can reduce puffiness, remove toxins and dead skin, increase blood flow, and help soften those wrinkles. To do it yourself, simply use a light moisturizer and press and stroke your face with mild pressure using your palms and fingertips, moving in an upward, circular motion.
5. Wear sunscreen
You may not always be able to adhere to tip #1 and avoid all sun exposure. You don’t want to stay in your home as a hermit just to prevent wrinkles, after all. If you do have to be exposed to UV rays, make sure you wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and unsparingly—even on cloudy days.
6. Use a retinol cream
Of course, it goes without saying that you should be moisturizing every day in order to keep your face smooth and hydrated. But to stave off wrinkles, make sure it’s a moisturizer with retinol in order to get that extra oomph. Retinol can slough off dead skin, but most important, it can promote collagen production, which will help keep those facial lines at bay.
7. Consider a chemical peel
When it’s too late to completely prevent wrinkles, consider a chemical peel. This non-surgical cosmetic procedure is an excellent alternative to facelifts and Botox. It will peel away that sun-damaged and wrinkled top layer of skin and leave you with a more youthful appearance. It can be a great way to slow down the aging process. It can also remove pre-cancerous skin growths, control acne, and soften the appearance of facial scars.
