brow lift vs faceliftYou know that you are ready to refresh your appearance by reducing wrinkles and smoothing or tightening your profile. However, deciding which approach to take in addressing your concerns may be confusing. Would a brow lift or a facelift be better? Choosing between a brow lift or facelift depends largely on the concerns you want addressed.

The difference between a facelift and brow lift

It’s a fairly common misconception that a facelift is a cure-all for any number of face-related concerns from forehead to chin. However, a facelift and brow lift are two distinct procedures designed to treat different areas of the face. A brow lift specifically treats the area from the upper eyelids to the hairline, while a facelift treats the mid to lower portions of the face. While many patients benefit from one procedure or the other, some may benefit from combining the two. Both procedures may also be combined with eyelid surgery, nose surgery, or other procedures as well.

The benefits of a facelift or brow lift

Facelifts and brow lifts both provide a number of anti-aging benefits to result in a refreshed, youthful look and smooth profile. However, the specific benefits are unique to each.

Facelift benefits: A facelift is best for tightening the skin and underlying tissues of the mid to lower face and the upper portions of the neck. It may reduce sagging jowls or the appearance of a double chin, in addition to smoothing wrinkles or lines around the nose and mouth. A facelift may be able to address fat deposits that have shifted away from previously plump, youthful cheeks due to the effects of gravity and aging over time.

Brow lift benefits: A brow lift is ideal for treating the forehead, smoothing horizontal wrinkles across the forehead. It also may be used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows or creases across the bridge of the nose. It may also tighten drooping or sagging upper eyelids. A brow lift is frequently combined with blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery.

How are brow lifts and facelifts performed?

Both a brow lift and facelift are surgical procedures in which incisions are made in the natural contours of the face or hidden in the hairline. Through small incisions, the skin, muscles, or fat of the areas being treated may be pulled tight, smoothing the face, neck, or forehead, and excess tissues may be removed. With modern technology, incisions are smaller than ever, greatly reducing the amount of time required for recovery, as well as potentially reducing the discomfort, swelling, and bruising experienced during recovery.

The best candidates for a brow lift or facelift

Although many patients will benefit from a brow lift or facelift, the average patient is between 40 and 60 years of age. The ideal candidate will have some degree of sagging skin, muscle laxity, or wrinkles in the face or forehead. Patients should be in overall good health and non-smokers. For a brow lift, patients who have a receding hairline or are bald should discuss incision locations or alternative approaches with their plastic surgeon.
