Vogue is calling it the next big thing for skincare. Reader’s Digest called it the hottest skincare trend. Celebs Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts are reportedly fans, and InStyle says today is all about tiny needles. At Monarch, we’re just calling it the answers to our skin prayers. What’s everyone talking about? Microneedling.

What is Microneedling

Microneedling is a process that uses fine needles to create hundreds of little wounds in the skin. Don’t call us crazy yet, there’s a reason thousands of people are lining up to get their skin poked by needles. This treatment stimulates the body’s natural wound process, triggering the remodeling of collagen and elastin. It can reverse years of sun damage, improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks, and enhance the skin’s overall appearance. Don’t worry, the minimally invasive treatment is virtually painless.

The Process

First, a numbing cream is applied to the area. Then, the needles move around the skin, in our case with the SkinPen®. The needles stimulate the skin to jumpstart its healing process. The whole treatment takes around 30 minutes, plus an additional 30-45 minutes for the numbing cream to be effective.

The procedure stimulates growth of collagen and elastin. It generates new skin cells, and can noticeably reduce fine lines, crow’s feet and deep wrinkles. Collagen growth can also reverse sun damage and discoloration. It can even tighten loose skin and shrink pores.

According to Cheryl Burgess, M.D., a dermatologist in Washington, D.C., “I want to scream it from the rooftops. Done regularly, microneedling will make your skin act like it did in your 20s—it’ll be thicker, it’ll glow, it’ll have the most beautiful tone and texture. And, really, what could be cooler than that?”

Monarch Skin Rejuvenation Center Aesthetician Erika Wetherill says, “I love the fact the treatment induces collagen and elastin formation for up to 300 days!”

One study found that nearly 100 percent of participants with acne-scarring reported an improvement in the visibility of their acne scars after microneedling. It can also repair stretch marks or acne scars all over the body.

Skin Pen

The SkinPen®, available at Monarch Skin Rejuvenation Center, is a microneedling device that causes controlled micro-injuries to stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. First, it pierces the skin, which causes the immune system to disinfect the area, clean it and create new tissue. Next, the wound is rebuilt and a new network of blood vessels develop. Finally, the wound is replaced by the new dermal tissues and blood vessels. The collagen is strengthened, which tightens the skin.

The SkinPen® uses vertical technology, which is different from traditional microneedling, making it safer and more precise. This procedure has little recovery time and can be applied on all skin types.
