Throughout their lives, nearly all women strive to achieve and maintain smooth, beautiful skin. From wearing sunscreen outdoors, to applying moisturizer on a daily basis, to exfoliating several times per week, there are multiple best practices for maintaining healthy skin. However, considering all the skin care resources provided by beauty magazines, morning talk shows, and Internet blogs, sometimes it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction, and learn about treatments that are truly 100 percent effective.
In honor of National Skin Care Awareness Month, here is a list of common frequently asked questions (FAQs) about how to achieve and maintain healthy, gorgeous skin.
How often should I wash my face?
Typically, you should wash your face once in the morning, and once at night before you go to bed. Use gentle face washes and soaps that are either glucose-based, or derived from coconut oil for the best results. Avoid using harsh cleansers that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium lauryl ether sulfate, and ammonium lauryl sulfate -- all of which can strip your skin of its natural oils and increase the risk for dehydration, irritation, and the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Never go to bed without washing your face, which can increase your risk for clogged pores and oil buildup.
Can I stay in the sun longer if I wear sunscreen with a high SPF?
No. SPF indicates how effectively the product can protect you from the sun, not the amount of time during which it can protect you. For example, sunscreen with an SPF of 30 can block out 97 percent of damaging UV rays, so in most cases, using sunscreen with a higher SPF isn’t always necessary. Regardless of the SPF you’re using, reapply sunscreen at least every two hours to protect your skin from the sun.
Does oily skin wrinkle as easily as dry skin?
No. Since oily skin tends to be thicker than dry skin, you may have more protection against sun damage, which can cause wrinkles. However, wearing sunscreen is equally as important for those who have oily skin to lower the risk for fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage.
Does junk food really cause acne?
Acne is not caused directly by junk food, but can occur due to how your body reacts to junk food. For example, many junk foods contain man-made ingredients and chemicals such as preservatives, which can interfere with your body’s hormone balance as well as with your skin’s natural pH. Junk food can also lead to or increase your risk for inflammation, which has been linked to acne. The best way to achieve healthy, youthful-looking skin is to eat nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, healthy fats, and protein.
Will I get the best results using skin care products from the same line?
Not necessarily. However, some brands will recommend you use other products from the same line for certain treatments. For example, if you use Youth Serum by iS Clinical to help reverse signs of aging on your skin, the instructions on the product label may recommend that you also use Youth Eye Complex, which may be more effective at making your eyes look youthful than the Youth Serum.
What’s the best way to get rid of cellulite permanently?
At this time, there are treatments that can help reduce the appearance of cellulite, but may not be able to eliminate cellulite completely. For instance, liposuction is effective at removing excess skin and fat, but may not remove or reverse skin dimpling caused by cellulite. A body lift is also effective at reducing the appearance of cellulite.
If you have specific skin care needs you feel must be addressed to help boost your confidence and reverse the aging process, consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can offer professional recommendations based on his or her experience. A plastic surgeon can examine the condition of your skin in full, and propose one or more cosmetic treatments that can effectively improve or enhance your appearance.
