Plastic surgery expectations“Look 20 years younger! Cut your age in half!” Many of us have seen these types of claims in plastic surgery advertising, but unfortunately, they are terribly misleading and can cause many to have unrealistic expectations for plastic surgery. In fact, the goal and expectation of looking significantly younger may be one of the worst reasons to seek plastic surgery. Plastic surgery has many benefits, but it is not a magic youth potion. The two best things you can do for yourself are to have realistic expectations of plastic surgery results and choose to undergo surgery for yourself with your own personal reasons in mind.

Have realistic expectations

The ideal goal for plastic surgery is to look like yourself, but better. Plastic surgery may enhance features in a way that provide a more youthful appearance, but it may not make you look significantly younger. Besides, your friends and family already know what you look like — if you were to dramatically alter your appearance, it might be noticeable and result in awkwardness. You want your friends and family to say, “Wow! You look great!”, not “What happened? You look totally different!” To achieve ideal results from your plastic surgery, opt for a look that will be in proportion with the rest of your body. Not only will you achieve your best look, but you will also achieve a natural look by keeping your surgical goals in proportion with your current appearance.

It is also important to understand that all surgery, while removing unwanted or excess skin and fat, will result in scarring. For the vast majority of plastic surgery procedures, incisions will be hidden in the natural curves and contours of your body, making them far less visible. For some procedures, your scars may even be hidden in your hairline or in pre-existing scars. For example, if you have had a caesarian section, your tummy tuck incision may be placed over your existing scar rather than creating a new scar.

Do surgery for yourself

In addition to having realistic expectations for your surgery, you will be much happier with your results if you do surgery for your own satisfaction. Doing surgery because someone else wants you to or because you want to attract a partner, or do better at work, you may not be happy with your results in the long-term. You want results that will meet your needs and make you happy for years to come. If you are considering undergoing plastic surgery to meet someone else’s goals or needs, take extra time to consider your options and the risks and benefits of surgery. Regardless of why you are considering surgery or what your goals are, discuss your motivations for seeking plastic surgery with your surgeon at Monarch Plastic Surgery during your consultation. Your surgeon will provide guidance regarding the potential outcomes of your surgery and how to best achieve your goals.
