breast lift versus breast augmentationIf you’re unhappy with the appearance of your breasts, a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures are available to address your concerns. Women looking to improve their bust line often undergo a combination of procedures. Two of the more common breast enhancement solutions available are breast lift and breast augmentation.

What is a breast lift?

Also known as a mastopexy, a breast lift involves the re-contouring of the breasts by raising them and repositioning the nipple. A breast lift is recommended for women who are experiencing moderate to severe drooping of the breasts, causing the nipple to point downward. For these women, the nipple and areola may also be so low on the breast that there is no visible breast skin underneath.

Am I a good candidate for a breast lift?

If you are experiencing extreme drooping of the breast and low positioning of the nipples, you are a good candidate for a breast lift procedure. A breast lift does not increase the volume of the breasts or increase the amount of cleavage. Therefore, women who are experiencing the above issues, have C or D cup-sized breasts, and do not want to increase their cup size are good candidates for a breast lift. A breast lift results in a more youthful, perkier bust and firmer breast.

What is a breast augmentation?

A breast augmentation, also known as an augmentation mammoplasty, increases the volume of the breast using implants made of silicone and are filled with either silicone or saline. This allows women to achieve the breast size and shape that they desire.

Why undergo breast augmentation?

Women who feel that their natural breast size is too small are good candidates for breast augmentation. Women who have one breast that is significantly smaller than the other may also want to undergo an augmentation to balance their appearance. Women who want to correct a reduction in breast volume following pregnancy may also choose to undergo a breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation and breast lift can be performed together

Breast augmentation may be conducted in conjunction with a breast lift if a woman who is experiencing breast drooping also desires a larger cup size. Those who want to maintain the roundness of the breast may also want to consider a combination breast augmentation and lift. A skilled plastic surgeon can help you determine which procedure is correct for your desired goals.
