dermal-fillersIt is natural for signs of aging to appear as we grow older, but for some of us, those signs may appear earlier or develop faster. This is particularly true for those who have a thinner face or who have experienced greater sun exposure than others. Over the years, it is normal to experience a loss of volume, sagging of the skin, and the development of lines and wrinkles around the nose, mouth, and eyes. When these signs become pronounced, we often begin to look older than we really are. Although good skin care and non invasive procedures may help reverse some of these effects. Nearly anyone who suffers from signs of aging may also benefit from facial rejuvenation treatments such as dermal fillers.

What happens beneath the skin to cause signs of aging?

In addition to excess sun exposure or a thinner facial structure, a number of factors at work below the surface of the skin may cause the appearance of aging. Over time, the bones of the face naturally begin to thin, which is most often noticeable along the cheekbones, and may appear to recede over time. Additionally, the fat pads that naturally lie over the cheeks become thinner and slowly move down the cheek, and the natural collagen that supports the skin and other structures of the face begins to slow in its production. All of these factors could result in looser and thinner skin that is also not as firm as it used to be. Dermal fillers can often add volume and definition to the face -- undoing some signs of aging.

The triangle of youth

When deciding if a dermal filler is right for you, it may be helpful to examine your facial structures for the “triangle of youth.” Imagine a line drawn from ear to ear across the highest point of the cheekbones, then lines from each end down to the chin, forming a triangle. The widest part of the face should be at the highest point of the cheekbones. However, as we age, and the skin and underlying structures begin to lose elasticity and volume, the fat pads and skin may begin to sag toward the jawline. This brings the widest point of the face downward, and as a result, also brings down the focal point of the face. When combined with lines and wrinkles that also result from changes to the skin and collagen, these factors can make an individual look older.

Dermal fillers

If you’ve found that your triangle of youth isn’t what it should be — the widest parts of the face are below the high points of the cheekbones — or you are suffering from excess lines and wrinkles, loose skin, or lost volume in the face, a dermal filler might be a good option for you. Fillers such as Juvéderm® and Radiesse® are ideal for restoring youth by filling in lines and wrinkles, stimulating collagen growth, and recreating a youthful canvas. Dermal fillers also have some advantages over surgical techniques designed to restore youthfulness in the face. Unlike surgery, dermal fillers have very little downtime -- with most patients returning to their activities immediately after treatment. In addition to minimal downtime, fillers also typically have fewer side effects, the most common of which are slight swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection sites; however, these side effects typically disappear in a few hours to a day or two.

Juvéderm® is an injectable hyaluronic acid gel that is ideal for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, particularly around the nose and mouth. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin but diminishes over time, creating facial wrinkles and loosening of the skin and loss of volume. Juvéderm® corrects these signs of aging by restoring hyaluronic acid in the skin and thus diminishing signs of aging. A single treatment with Juvéderm® usually lasts as long as six months.

Radiesse® is an injectable dermal filler that consists of tiny microspheres made up of calcium hydroxyapatite, a substance similar to natural bone that restores volume in the face by stimulating the body’s natural production of collagen. Collagen is the natural scaffolding under the skin that provides volume, and without enough of it, wrinkles and fine lines may begin to appear. Radiesse® is injected directly into moderate to severe folds and wrinkles, and over time, will stimulate collagen production for long-term reduction in wrinkles and lines and increased volume in the face.
