You’ve had liposuction and have taken advantage of Smartlipo™, and you are excited about your results. You are ready to go out and show off your new sleek, slim features and take full advantage of them. However, for all the benefits you have experienced thanks to Smartlipo, you must stay focused on maintaining your results.
Smart recovery to maintain Smartlipo results
It may take as long as two to three months to see the full results of your Smartlipo treatment. Your daily habits during this recovery period are crucial to your healing. Although Smartlipo recovery is generally considered much less rigorous than traditional liposuction, there are still some guidelines that you should follow to get you off to a good start.
Immediately after your Smartlipo treatment, you may be instructed to wear compression garments to help minimize bruising and swelling. Depending on your treatment area, you may need to follow specific instructions for caring for incisions and bathing. Keep your hands clean before caring for incisions or sutures in order to minimize the risk of infection and to also minimize visible scarring.
During the first two weeks after your Smartlipo treatment, you will be able to return to a normal diet right away. It’s important that you follow your surgeon’s recovery instructions as closely as possible. Although you will need to avoid significant or strenuous exercise right away, most patients are able to take brief walks a few days after surgery, and to slowly add in other activities. Most patients are able to return to their normal workouts two to three weeks after surgery, but you should expect to tire more easily as your body responds and adjusts to post-Smartlipo changes.
Once you have sailed through your Smartlipo recovery, be sure to maintain your results by following a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise on a regular basis. In fact, exercise and proper nutrition are the two most important factors in maintaining your Smartlipo results.
Even before you complete your Smartlipo recovery, focus on eating a healthy diet. Post-operative nutrition and diet should include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Ideally, eat foods in their most natural forms and avoid processed foods, particularly those that contain a high amount of sugar, salt, preservatives, and additives. If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, or if the serving size seems small compared to the amount of calories in the food, it might be best to look for a healthier option. Don’t forget to stay hydrated, drink plenty of water, and limit soda, alcohol, and high-calorie coffee drinks.
Once you have been given the approval to return to your regular exercise routine, make a plan to add physical activity to your schedule on a regular basis. Look for exercises and activities that you enjoy or that you can do with friends and family for fun. The more you enjoy your exercise, the more likely you will be to stick with it. Ideally, mix both cardiovascular exercises with strength training, and make a commitment to not only maintain your Smartlipo results, but your overall health.
What if fat returns after liposuction?
Unfortunately, without diligent self-care after liposuction, even with Smartlipo, unwanted fat may return. However, before you worry about gaining back your lost fat, it’s important to understand how and where fat could reappear. The good news is that even if you do gain back some of the fat removed from Smartlipo, it typically won’t return to the same places. Instead, after any type of liposuction, when fat returns, it typically finds its way to places that are in proportion with the rest of the body — leaving you with a pleasing contour and body profile.
