Plastic surgery is a big commitment, and you may go into your procedure expecting your results to last forever. While some procedures such as rhinoplasty (nose surgery) or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) are considered mostly permanent, the permanence of other procedures depends a great deal on how you treat your body after surgery. From following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions to maintaining your weight and more, there are a number of things you can do to make your plastic surgery results last long-term.
Keep your follow-up appointments
After surgery, be sure to keep all of your follow-up appointments with your surgeon. Your surgeon is your best bet for monitoring your progress during recovery. Your follow-up appointments serve several purposes. First and foremost is to ensure that you are healing properly. Your surgeon will inspect your incisions and the area on which you had surgery performed. In addition, your surgeon will be able to offer you suggestions on how to improve healing, increase comfort, and keep you on track. Be sure to discuss any concerns you have with your doctor during your appointments, and don’t be afraid to get in touch between appointments if your concerns can’t wait.
Exercise and nutrition
Controlling your weight is essential to preserving your plastic surgery results, especially if you have had slimming procedures such as a tummy tuck, thigh lift, arm lift or liposuction. Maintaining a healthy weight has numerous benefits, from keeping illness and disease at bay, to improving energy and elevating your mood. In addition, after plastic surgery, exercise and a healthy diet will also help preserve your surgical results. Weight gain may undo your results, particularly if you gain more than just a couple of pounds or keep weight on long-term. Procedures that involve removal of excess skin and fat, or tightening of muscles are difficult to repeat with good results. Maintaining your health and weight are the best ways to ensure that your results last for years to come.
Rather than waiting until your skin begins to show signs of aging and then trying to treat it, start using sunscreen to prevent the damage in the first place. Your plastic surgery results will look best if your skin is youthful and healthy, and prevention is much easier than treating a problem after the fact. Sunscreen will help to protect the collagen and elastin in your skin, allowing it to retain the properties that keep it youthful. In addition, sunscreen is your best defense in protecting against skin cancer. Be sure to cover all of your exposed skin, including on your face, neck, ears and hands. In fact, make sure to coat your hands evenly with sunscreen even if you are only going out for errands to help keep you looking young overall. Damaged or aged skin on the hands tends to make you look older, even if the rest of your body and your face look years younger.
