Cosmetic procedures for men have been on the rise. In fact, over the past 20 years, the amount of cosmetic procedures performed on men has increased by 325 percent in the U.S. and according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) now account for one-in-ten procedures. Competition in the workplace is a main driving factor as men have become increasingly aware their image matters when it comes to their career. Additionally, a recent Healthline interview with a representative of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) found men today are more comfortable and open about taking pride in their appearance than they have in the past.
The following procedures lead the way in men’s cosmetic surgery:
A Fox News report found liposuction, or the removal of fat from the body, to be the most common plastic surgery procedure for men, with over 45,000 liposuctions performed in 2016. Liposuction helps sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, such as the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck.
Male Breast Reduction
Did you know up to one-in-four men have some form of breast enlargement? The condition can occur at any age and can significantly affect self-esteem. Gynecomastia, or male breast reduction surgery, flattens out the chest while enhancing its contours. Male breast reduction surgery was the second most popular plastic surgery procedure with over 31,000 performed in 2016.
The third most popular cosmetic procedure for men in 2016 was eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty. This procedure can be performed for both cosmetic and medical reasons and is used to improve the sad and tired appearance of the eyes. Today’s eyelid surgeries look very natural and can be performed quickly and painlessly with a very minimal recovery time.
Although not a surgical procedure, Botox injections for men remain highly popular. Botox is an extremely quick approach to softening or removing the natural wrinkles between the eyes (glabella), on the sides of the eyes (crow’s feet) and on the forehead. Fox News reported over 450,000 men received Botox injections last year.
