Senior citizens aren’t so senior anymore! On National Senior Citizen Day, we’re celebrating the youth of seniors. With cultural changes such as individuals remaining in the workforce longer and staying as active as they did in their 40s, as well as longer life expectancy, there are increasing numbers of cosmetic procedures for men and women in the over 65 age group. Plastic surgery is helping seniors to look as young as they feel.

Rising Popularity

In the last five years, surgical procedures for men and women over the age of 65 have increased by 58 percent, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Combined surgical and nonsurgical procedures for this age group has risen 89 percent in only five years, as well. Popularity for plastic surgery among seniors is definitely trending.

The numbers don’t lie. In just two decades, the number of procedures performed among this age group has increased by 1,263 percent! With eye surgery in the lead, followed by facelifts and liposuction as the most popular procedures performed.

“Is it safe?” is perhaps the number one question on seniors’ minds when considering cosmetic surgery. While this mostly depends on the individual’s current state of health, technology has paved the way to expand both surgical and non-surgical procedures for seniors with less risk of medical complications. In fact, two recent studies by plastic surgeons at Cleveland Clinics which evaluated surgical risk after facelift and abdominoplasty procedures found when properly screened for health issues, the risk for patients age 65 and older was no greater than a similar younger age group.

The Washington Post says many seniors are choosing procedures to refresh instead of transform. With more people in this age group working than any time since the turn of the century, plastic surgery is a way to combat ageism in the workplace. It also helps seniors to change the way they perceive themselves and live their lives. An appearance to match the influx of energy and health has helped many seniors to keep living a youthful life. It reduces the disconnect between how they look and feel.
