nighttime skin care tipsYou may know that going to bed without washing your face is bad for your skin, but are you up to date on best practices for nighttime skin care? While you sleep, new skin cells grow faster than when you are awake, according to researchers at the University of California-Irvine. This means that creating a good evening facial routine should be a high priority if you want to keep your skin happy and healthy.

Try these five skin care tips to give your beauty a boost while getting some shut-eye:

1. Cleanse your skin and remove all makeup and buildup

Remove the daily muck that builds up on your face, as well as any makeup before you go to bed. Using a cleansing brush and gentle face cleanser with lukewarm water can help remove dirt and oil from your skin. Remember, don’t overdo it with the cleansing brush, as you don’t want to cause any damage to your skin. Stop using this product if you see any changes in your skin.

2. Use a soothing face mask to help other products work efficiently

Adding a soothing face mask to your regimen can help open your pores, allowing your other skin care products to work better at moisturizing your skin. The active ingredients penetrate and easily absorb into the skin after using a facial mask, and can even help you relax after a long day.

3. Use a topical retinoid to boost your skin’s health

A small amount of retinoid should be applied after you pat your face dry. Creams such as these can help brighten and heal your skin by reducing clogged pores, evening out skin tone, and promoting collagen-building, anti-aging effects.

4. Always moisturize your face and neck

Moisturizing your skin at night can help it look and feel soft and smooth. There are many moisturizing creams out there, including both daytime and nighttime creams. Using a nighttime cream may look and feel bulky, but it can help make your skin look refreshed in the morning when you wake up. Try using a moisturizer with antioxidants, peptides, and vitamins C and A to help repair the “insults” from your day.

5. Add eye cream after night cream

Eye creams can help reduce puffiness if formulated with caffeine, or even increase moisture levels if formulated with niacinamide. Adding your eye cream after your night cream can help you maintain a youthful-looking appearance by preventing your skin from drying out and staving off the onset of wrinkles.
