Plastic surgery and men: Staying competitive in the workplace

Men in older age groups often see younger men coming up the ranks and getting promotions, raises, and other perks while their own careers seem to stall. Staying competitive in today’s workplace is only partially about knowledge, skills, and performance. In many cases, physical appearances carry quite a bit of weight in the workplace, and for many men, an authoritative look can make all the difference.

Men and aging

Just as women undergo changes in their appearance as they age, so do men. Men often begin to display signs of sagging skin in their jaws and necks as they age, as well as wrinkles on their foreheads. While a tinge of gray hair at the temples may give a mark of distinction, wrinkles or sagging skin can undermine that effect -- causing a man to look older, tired, and lacking in energy.

Quick fixes at lunch time

Many men cite recovery time as a reason for not seeking plastic surgery during their busy careers. They are concerned that they may need to take too much time off from work, or have concerns about bruising and swelling following surgery. They may worry that coworkers will notice they’ve had a procedure, and that such knowledge might have an adverse effect on how they are perceived by others. As a result, many men opt for easy, in-office procedures that can be done over the course of the lunch hour.

Lunchtime procedures often include medical spa skin treatments, Botox, or dermal fillers. While some treatments will have immediate effects, other treatments may take effect slowly over an extended period of time. The key is that such treatments and procedures are administered in a brief period of time, and are associated with little to no downtime afterwards. The ability to go to lunch, have a treatment, and get back to the office without anyone being the wiser is appealing to most men.

Friday afternoons and vacations

Some men opt for more invasive procedures that can be performed on Friday afternoons so they can spend time recovering over the weekend before heading back to work on Monday. Others find it beneficial to schedule procedures around a vacation -- taking advantage of a week or more away from work to recover and get back to work with less discomfort and minimal swelling and bruising. Vacation is the perfect time to undergo eyelid surgery or liposuction, which are two common procedures men seek to improve their appearance and workplace competition.

As mentioned, skin treatments, Botox, dermal fillers, liposuction, and eyelid surgery are all appealing to men who want to gain a competitive edge by improving their appearance. However, some men may not be aware about what these procedures actually entail.

Skin treatments

Ranging from in-office procedures such as chemical peels, to light therapy, to laser treatments, skin treatments aim to improve the quality and texture of the skin. Most patients report feeling refreshed and invigorated by skin care treatments, which may also include at-home regimens to continue the benefits of in-office treatments.

Botox and dermal fillers

Botox and dermal fillers offer smoothing of fine lines, wrinkles and the softening of creases. While Botox helps reduce the appearance of some lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers add volume, filling in hollow-appearing areas or adding volume to creases that help minimize the appearance of these age indicators.

As we age, gravity begins to pull down our skin and underlying tissues, including fat. In addition, the older we get, the more difficult it becomes to exercise or diet away fat deposits. When diet and exercise won’t reduce unwanted fat deposits, or gravity causes fat to settle in an unsightly manner, liposuction can help reduce the appearance of fat deposits and lend a trimmer, sculpted appearance to treated areas.

Eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty addresses sagging or drooping eyelids and can also help reduce eyelid puffiness. By improving the appearance of the eyelids, most patients appear more awake and energetic. They also tend to look better rested and more youthful. For some patients, improving the state of the eyelids also helps improve peripheral vision.
