Post-liposuction considerations

post-liposuctionMany patients are overall happy with their size and weight, but perhaps they aren’t quite so happy with the overall shape of their body. They may feel as if their waist isn’t quite in proportion with the rest of their body, or perhaps their thighs may seem pudgy. Despite exercise and diet, these stubborn areas just won’t respond. For many patients, the answer is liposuction; however, it is important to understand what liposuction is, as well as the changes that might be experienced after treatment.

The benefits of liposuction

It is important to understand that liposuction is not a weight loss tool and is not a substitute for diet and exercise. However, many patients find that they feel and look slimmer after liposuction thanks the contouring effects of the procedure, and the results are typically very long lasting with continued proper diet and exercise. Liposuction, though still an invasive procedure, is significantly less invasive than other surgical procedures and has a shorter recovery period. It can also be used to slim, or contour a number of body areas, including the waist and abdomen, hips and thighs, the back, the neck, and even the chest. Liposuction is also frequently combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or nonsurgical skin-tightening procedures.

What liposuction doesn’t do

As mentioned, liposuction is not a diet and exercise alternative and is not a weight loss method. In fact, in a recent study performed by researchers at the University of Colorado, it was found that many patients who undergo liposuction may initially experience a small reduction in weight, but over time their weight returns to the same level as prior to liposuction.

Why liposuction may still benefit patients despite regaining lost weight

But, don’t fret! The study also found that although most patients return to their original weight, they still achieve significant benefits including improved body contour. Remaining fat cells expand and can be stored in other areas of the body. Many patients in the study found that they achieved a greater overall balance in their body shape and proportions. Patients reported increased body symmetry, and most never returned to their pre-liposuction shape.

New technology makes liposuction more precise than ever

Liposuction has come a long way over the years, and newer techniques are making it faster and more precise than ever, including SmartLipo™, an even less invasive approach that uses a small laser to break up fat cells before removing them. SmartLipo™ is much easier on the body and results in reduced swelling and bruising, which in turn, reduces downtime and recovery.
