When you reach your 40s, you may notice a few signs of aging appearing in your face. Your skincare regimen may need to change to address the changes in your skin. Here’s a guide to eight changes you may experience in the next few years and how to deal with them:
Before you hit menopause, it’s likely that your skin will continue to remain smooth and youthful if it’s in good health. You’ll want to get a proper skincare regimen in place as you approach menopause to help maximize and retain your smoothness. Try using an antioxidant serum with vitamin C and a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher in the morning, and a vitamin-A derivative or prescription retinoid at night.
Instead of viewing those crow’s feet only when you smile, your wrinkles may now begin to take up permanent residence on your face, especially if your skin is dry. You may be able to cover up fine lines and wrinkles with some facial creams, serums, and makeup. However, if you want to smooth out those pesky lines, try a few injections of Botox® or dermal fillers.
3. Sagging cheeks
Age can sometimes take plump, youthful cheeks on a trip to the south. Your face may begin to look gaunter with more smile lines. Ask your skincare specialist about dermal fillers that can help keep your cheeks nice and plump.
4. Acne 2.0
Your hormone levels may jump around a bit, which can cause some rosacea or perioral dermatitis, which is not the same as the acne you had in your youth. Generic acne treatments may irritate and exacerbate this new acne, so it’s best if you visit with your dermatologist to ask for advice on the best treatment option.
5. Obvious pores
Your pores can get lax with age. Your cheeks and chin will show them most, but you may be able to reduce their appearance with a retinoid prescription from your doctor. Your dermatologist may also suggest a chemical peel or facial every six to eight weeks to remove dirt and gunk from your pores.
6. Aged eyes
Your busy 30s show in the skin around your eyes as you move into your 40s. Keep your skin well moisturized to deal with the wrinkles. Add in a caffeine-based eye cream to eliminate dark circles and puffy bags. You may even consider a dermal filler to help treat any hollowness under the fat pad.
7. Less pout
Sun damage and age-related collagen loss can cause chronic dryness, less definition, and thinning in and around your mouth. Your pout may be lessened with age, but you can use SPF lip balms to prevent damage from occurring. It may be a good idea to invest in a good, neutral lip liner or an in-office dermal filler.
The neck is one area that can often give away your age. Your daily skincare routine can help with firming up the skin of your neck, and an injectable filler can help even more. Ask your skin care professional about what he or she would recommend best for your neck.
