Chances are you have heard of chemical peels, laser skin treatments, and other options for treating problem skin or resurfacing skin for a more youthful appearance. Whether you are concerned about acne, fine lines or wrinkles, or uneven pigmentation, you have a number of options available; however, one option that you may not be familiar with is the SkinPen. SkinPen is a “micro skin” treatment, designed to stimulate your skin to repair itself.
What is SkinPen?
SkinPen is a revolutionary treatment that creates numerous microsopic channels through the topmost layer of the skin to stimulate the production of natural collagen and elastin -- two critical elements for healthy, youthful skin. The body naturally produces both of these substances, but over time, they begin to diminish and production slows -- adding to the aging process. SkinPen is suitable for just about every skin type. In addition, it may be used on many different parts of the body, not just the face. SkinPen is suitable for the face, the neck and upper chest, arms, hands, legs, and even the abdomen and back. It is particularly useful for those suffering from back acne or stretch marks, two conditions that may not be easily treated with other skin treatments.
How does SkinPen work?
SkinPen works by creating a series of tiny micro-traumas through a delivery process involving a pen-like with microneedling technology to promote repair and healing without the need for harsher treatments. In fact, SkinPen works in a way that makes it minimally invasive with little downtime. SkinPen works in three phases:
Phase one of SkinPen treatment is considered the inflammatory phase. The body’s immune system is stimulated to produce neutrophils and macrophages, important components in healing, which disinfect and clean the microtraumas created by SkinPen. During this process, new collagen and elastin begin to develop, allowing for the creation of fresh, healthy cell growth.
Phase two is the proliferation phase. During phase two of SkinPen treatment, the skin continues to heal as new, healthy tissues are produced, taking the place of damaged tissues. In this phase, elastin and collagen develop more rapidly.
Phase three is the remodeling phase of SkinPen treatment and where results really become apparent. During phase three, the microtraumas finish healing and fresh skin cells and the underlying tissues are mature. Most patients begin to experience a tightening effect of the skin over the new collagen and elastin, causing the treated skin to appear clearer, fresher, and more youthful.
What to expect from SkinPen treatment and recovery
During your SkinPen treatment, most patients experience symptoms similar to a mild sunburn. Common symptoms include redness, swelling, or tenderness; however, most people don’t require any specific downtime. Most patients are able to go back to normal activities the same day or the day after treatment. If you wear makeup, you should be able to apply makeup right away to cover up any redness or irritation as your skin heals.
How safe is SkinPen?
Because SkinPen uses microneedling technology to make microtraumas in the skin’s surface, safety may be one of your concerns. SkinPen has a proven record of safety and is sterile, using disposable needle cartridges. The SkinPen tool is also lightweight and ergonomically designed to fit into your skin care provider’s hand easily and to allow for effective treatment even in tight areas. SkinPen also uses BioSleeve technology to prevent cross-contamination. In addition, an exhaust port on the SkinPen tool helps to prevent broken capillaries or tissue damage during treatment.
