No matter what age you are, you have probably taken at least one selfie, be it to see how you look or to post on a social media platform. More than simply a social media trend, selfies are changing how people are approaching plastic surgery, according to Verdict Medical Devices.
Previously, when people were thinking about plastic surgery, they would often bring in images of famous people who they desired to look like. Now, people are bringing in pictures of themselves - although, these photos are often ones taken at a certain angle or have been edited to create an ideal look. Additionally, 55% of doctors, who are part of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, reported that patients brought in photoshopped selfies of themselves to a consultation!
According to Dr. Keith Hodge, a Monarch plastic surgeon, clients are having procedures done because they want to look the same in person as they do on social media. Here are a few of the most popular ones --
- Botox 💉
Botox is a purified protein toxin that is derived from a specific form of bacteria. Originally used as a remedy to treat neck and facial spasms, this treatment is now FDA-approved to smooth wrinkles in certain areas of the face.
- Fillers 💉
Juvéderm® is an injectable gel used to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. Voluma XC is the first FDA-approved injectable gel formulated to add volume to the cheek area, which smoothes and contours the cheeks to combat signs of aging in adults aged 21 and over.
- Kybella Injections 💉
Kybella is an FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment for submental fullness, also known as a “double chin.” Submental fullness occurs when fat develops under the chin, but Kybella injections treat this area by contouring and improving the appearance of the double chin in sessions of 15 to 20 minutes.
