What is Juvederm?
Juvederm is an FDA-approved family of dermal fillers using Hylacross technology, which includes hyaluronic acid. These fillers work by temporarily adding volume to the skin to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Juvederm is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure, and is the only non-surgical hyaluronic acid filler that is FDA-approved. It treats moderate to severe wrinkles around the nose, mouth, and cheeks.
How does Juvederm reduce the appearance of wrinkles?
Juvederm uses hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance that provides elasticity and strength to the skin. Hyaluronic acid also plays a role in keeping skin moistened, and skin aging has a strong association with loss of moisture. Over time, the amount of hyaluronic acid in your skin decreases. This is caused by environmental factors, including exposure to sunlight and the natural aging process. The loss causes your skin to start to lose its volume and structure, which leads to wrinkles and skin folds. Juvederm restores hyaluronic acid to your skin, which in turn reduces the appearance of wrinkles and folds.
How long do results from Juvederm typically last?
The effects of Juvederm injections may differ depending on the location, the doctor performing the procedure, the extent of wrinkles, and a person's overall health. However, in an optimal setting, the results should last up to one year with just one treatment. You will need to have future injections to retain the results, although less material is typically required for additional treatments.
Is Juvederm safe?
Juvederm is FDA-approved and is safe for use. However, those who are allergic to any of the ingredients, including lidocaine, should not use the product. The safety of the product among some populations, including those under 35 years and over 65 years old and pregnant or breastfeeding women, has yet to be studied. This does not mean Juvederm is unsafe, it just means the overall safety has not been determined due to a lack of information. Just as with any type of procedure, you should discuss your health and any medical conditions with your doctor to reduce the risk of side effects. The most common side effects are mild, last seven days or less, and are associated with injection-site reactions, including inflammation, itching, bruising, and discoloration.
Juvederm has become a popular option to rejuvenate the skin for a younger, more radiant appearance. With its patented use of hyaluronic acid, it can take years off your appearance with minimal side effects and recovery time for a longer result than many other non-permanent solutions.
