Prior to your having abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery, your cosmetic surgeon will take a detailed medical history and perform a physical exam to determine if you are fit for surgery. Before your procedure, he or she will provide you with preoperative instructions and answer any questions you may have. Your surgeon will ask you to:

  • Stop smoking for at least six weeks prior to surgery to reduce risk of complications and promote better healing.

  • Avoid taking medications that can cause increased risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, certain anti-inflammatory medications, and some herbal medications.

  • Stay hydrated, as it is very important both before and after surgery for a safe recovery.

Your surgeon may also recommend weight benchmarks or other lifestyle changes to help further minimize your chance of complications.

The following measures will also help you prepare yourself and your home for your recovery:

  • Arrange for your children to be cared for. You may not be able to lift them for two to six weeks.

  • Prepare healthy freezer meals and snacks that are easy to reheat.

  • Move all of your food and toiletries within easy reach — preferably at hip level — so that you do not have to reach for them.

  • Set up an area on your nightstand for your medications. Be sure to add a digital thermometer, several bottles of water, Kleenex, and plain, low-sodium crackers, as you will need to keep them within easy reach.

  • Make sure your remote controls have fresh batteries, and have plenty of reading materials and movies ready in advance. Plug in your cell phone charger so you can keep your phone nearby.

  • Set up your bed and a recliner (if you have one) with plenty of pillows.

  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery and stay with you for at least the first night after your procedure.
