using antioxidants for youthful skinWho doesn’t want to look young for as long as possible? Unfortunately, for some of us, maintaining a youthful appearance may feel like a race against time and mother nature. Most of us are well aware of the damaging effects of the sun without really understanding the process of UV radiation damage. Even if you do understand the process, what can you do to protect your skin against UV damage and maintain your youth for as long as possible? The answer is eating foods and using products that contain antioxidants.

Skin damaging and protecting agents

Our skin naturally ages over time, but some factors cause the skin to show signs of aging at an accelerated rate, while others may help prevent early aging. One of the most notable causes of premature skin aging is ultraviolet radiation from sun exposure. UVA and UVB rays penetrate skin cells, causing damage through the release of free radicals, which are particles that are reactive to oxygen and cause the breakdown and mutation of cellular DNA.

Free-radical buildup can lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which makes up the supportive fibers that give skin its smooth, plump, healthy appearance. When collagen and elastin break down, wrinkles develop. The more extensive the break down is, the more widespread and severe the wrinkles can become. In addition, breakdown due to free radicals has also been associated with some forms of skin cancer. Protecting the skin by using antioxidants can help preserve skin tone and the appearance of youth.

Is Tiron the antioxidant of choice in the near future?

Researchers recently created a compound called Tiron that acts as a potent antioxidant, potentially offering 100 percent protection from UVA radiation. This is exciting news, as UVA radiation reaches deep into the layers of the skin to cause damage to the DNA in skin cells and collagen that gives skin its elasticity and plump, fresh, young appearance. How exactly Tiron is able to protect skin from radiation is unknown, and research is ongoing. Thus far, Tiron’s effects on humans have not been studied. Tiron requires further testing, as it is not a naturally-occurring compound and still requires trial studies in humans.

Alternatives to Tiron

In the meantime, there are other steps you can take to protect your skin and maintain a fresh, youthful look for as long as possible. Many powerful antioxidants are available in both the foods you eat and some skincare products. Green tea, resveratrol, turmeric, and lycopene are particularly important in maintaining and protecting the skin. These compounds have been shown to slow free radical skin damage, as well as reduce the risk of developing certain skin cancers. Resveratrol in the diet is found in red wine, turmeric in curries and many other foods, and lycopene in tomatoes.

Antioxidants in your diet

Eating a diet comprised of fresh fruits and vegetables can help ensure that you are eating antioxidants on a regular basis. Eat tomatoes and tomato-based foods at every possible opportunity to take advantage of their high lycopene content. Turmeric is found in many curry dishes and has many health benefits. Some people also enjoy turmeric-infused warm milk for its antioxidant properties, as well as for its abilities to improve quality of sleep. Add in regular cups of green tea and the occasional glass of red wine, and you have most the most powerful antioxidants in your diet. Each of these foods also has other health benefits, including supporting the immune system and the cardiovascular system. In addition to the foods and drinks listed, foods containing vitamins C and E are also often high in antioxidants.

Antioxidants in your skincare products

Every day, technology advances and new, improved products become available for skincare. In addition to nourishing our bodies from the inside out, we now can apply nutrients directly to the skin through creams, lotions, and other products. A few essential products, packed with antioxidants, include:

Rejuve’neck

A balm designed specifically for the delicate skin of the neck, Rejuve’neck contains antioxidants in the form of vitamins C and E, as well as Ferulic acid ester. These, along with skin enhancing peptides, gently retexture the skin over the neck to create a smoother, more uniform look and feel.

SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E

Perhaps the most powerful antioxidant skincare product around is Resveratrol B E. Containing the same antioxidants found in red wine, this concentrate is best applied at night to neutralize age-accelerating free radicals while strengthening and repairing the skin. Resveratrol B E contains the highest concentration of resveratrol of any products available today.

Skin Medica TNS Eye Repair

Eye Repair contains a unique blend of antioxidants vitamins C and E, along with hyaluronic acid to support the fine skin around the eyes. Because the skin around the eyes is fairly thin, it often shows signs of wrinkling before the rest of the face. Eye Repair can help minimize the formation of such wrinkles while also minimizing the appearance of dark circles.

The state of your skin says a lot about you, and can add to first impressions formed by others. Keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and young with antioxidants.
