Why you need an exfoliant

skin care benefits of exfoliantsHealthy skin gives off a radiant glow. It continuously renews itself, shedding old skin cells as they are replaced with fresh new cells. When this process is working correctly, millions of cells are sloughed off, revealing smooth, healthy skin beneath.

Over time, however, this shedding process slows down, resulting in dullness, dryness, bumps, large pores, and breakouts. Sometimes sun damage or environmental factors are to blame for this problem, but often it is unavoidable as we age.

Fortunately, there are effective, gentle ways to accelerate the shedding process again and help combat these problems. A quality exfoliant can help your skin slough off unneeded cells, making it luminous without using harsh, irritating chemicals. Exfoliants can also improve your skin’s hydration and give it a firmer appearance.

Different exfoliants, different benefits

There are two types of exfoliants: alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and beta hydroxy acid (BHA). These two ingredients work in different ways, but many people can benefit from using both.

  • AHA (also known as glycolic acid) works by sloughing off skin’s upper layers, improving signs of aging such as fine lines, crepiness, and roughness. It gives the skin a smoother, more toned appearance. It is found in many over-the-counter anti-aging products in different formulations and strengths.
  • BHA (also known as salicylic acid) is able to penetrate oil within the pore, so it’s well suited for controlling blackheads, acne, and enlarged pores. This is why it’s commonly seen in acne treatment products. But many of the drugstore products with BHA are harsh and can only be tolerated by extremely oily skin. A gentler BHA product, however, can still offer these benefits without drying or irritating the skin. Note: If you are allergic to aspirin, do not use BHA/ salicylic acid.

If you choose a high-quality, properly formulated product that contains both AHA and BHA, you can reap the benefits of both exfoliants in one step. Most people can tolerate using an exfoliant regularly, but those with sensitive skin may need to start gradually and use caution to avoid irritation. Talk with a skin care professional about how often you should use an exfoliant. Exfoliants can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so when using an AHA or BHA product, apply sunscreen daily.
